Comment on Romans 1:17

Romans 1:16-17, For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.

The true God is a righteous God – holy – magnificent.  This would inspire reverence and terror in us if we understood it.

What the people of this world call “God” is most characteristically not God.  The gods of this world do not show themselves righteous in the redemption of the world.  Instead they allow free course to the unrighteousness of men and affirm the course of the world as it is.  Thus, they are irrelevent for the world.

A righteous God judges and condemns the world as it is because justice requires it. But, the righteous God satisfies His own justice.  God appeases God by His own death.  This would inspire love, thankfulness and humility in us if we understood it.

God is faithful to Himself, therefore, men can have faith in Him and not be disappointed.  That which terrifies us about God is the very thing that we can trust in.

The person who is terrified, and who hopes, he shall live.
